• Unexpected Things Hiding in Plain Sight •
Many artists create with brushes & paint or pen & ink.
I use a camera to record what I see.
-----
Imagination comes into play when I observe scenes like the ones in this series. I have to anticipate what I’ll get from pressing the shutter button. How might the subject look on my computer monitor or on a wall?
-----
The photos are of surfaces I spotted while walking down the street in my Brooklyn neighborhood in January 2025. The surfaces were covered with substances from the environment, deposited
there by natural and man-made forces.
-----
The photos daze and amaze me. They are a startling discovery and inexhaustibly mysterious. The scenes were available to anyone walking down those ordinary streets. While they are all photos of the same thing, there are vast differences.
-----
I feel awe and wonderment when I look at them. A sublime experience. Like looking at shots taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. The difference between my photos and the ones from space, is that I wasn’t focused millions of light years away... just a few feet.
-----
This is not the first time I’ve seen there is more going on in the world than what immediately meets the eye. I've aimed my camera at many things that surprised me...“Butternut Mountain”, “523 Tenth Street”, “Ave P”, “City Canyons”.
-----
What creation presents is astonishing, when one is open to giving it attention.

What do you think?
How do they make you feel?
